Rental Terms and Conditions
Last updated: July 25, 2026
These online terms supplement the signed rental agreement, booking confirmation, inspection record, and written instructions provided by Alani Car Rental Corp. The signed rental agreement is the primary document for each rental and controls if it includes a more specific term.
1. Agreement and renter responsibility
By booking, receiving, operating, or continuing to use a vehicle from Alani Car Rental Corp., the renter accepts responsibility for the vehicle during the rental period and agrees to follow the signed rental agreement, these online terms, and applicable Hawaii law.
The renter is responsible for all approved drivers, passengers, keys, accessories, documents, payment obligations, tickets, and vehicle condition from pickup until Alani Car Rental Corp. checks the vehicle back in.
2. Authorized drivers
- Only the primary renter and drivers approved by Alani Car Rental Corp. may operate the vehicle.
- Every driver must meet our rental requirements and hold a valid license for the full rental period.
- The vehicle may not be transferred, subleased, lent, or used by an undisclosed driver.
3. Payment, deposit, and charges
- The renter must pay the rental rate, taxes, fees, deposit, optional services, extensions, and any other charges listed in the booking or rental agreement.
- A standard refundable rental payment deposit or card authorization hold of $200 is required before pickup. It may be applied to unpaid rental charges, approved extensions, missing fuel, cleaning, lost keys, technician service, tickets, and other lawful non-damage charges.
- The deposit is not a damage deposit or an advance payment for possible vehicle damage. No amount may be charged or withheld for damage unless the cost and the renter's responsibility have been agreed to in writing or determined as provided by law. Damage claims are handled separately.
- After the vehicle is returned, any remaining deposit balance is released or returned after the final calculation of non-damage charges. Bank processing times may apply to card authorization releases.
- Rental charges continue until the vehicle, keys, and accessories are returned to an approved Alani Car Rental Corp. location and checked in.
- If a payment is declined, disputed, reversed, or not completed, the renter remains responsible for the amount owed and any collection costs allowed by law.
4. Vehicle use restrictions
The vehicle may not be used:
- By an unauthorized driver or by anyone impaired by alcohol, drugs, medication, or fatigue.
- For racing, reckless driving, towing, pushing, off-road driving, beach driving, or driving on unpaved roads unless expressly approved in writing.
- In ocean or salt water, flooded areas, deep standing water, loose sand, or any condition likely to cause water intrusion, undercarriage damage, or corrosion.
- For illegal activity, rideshare, delivery, commercial transport, driver training, or carrying passengers or goods for hire without written approval.
- Outside the permitted rental area, or shipped/inter-island transported, without written approval.
- To carry more passengers than seat belts, overload the vehicle, remove seats, alter the vehicle, or install equipment without approval.
Violation of these restrictions may terminate the renter's right to use the vehicle and may make the renter responsible for recovery, damage, loss of use, and related expenses.
5. Vehicle condition, fuel, and cleaning
- The renter should inspect the vehicle at pickup and report any concern before driving away.
- The vehicle must be returned in the same general condition as received, with ordinary wear excepted.
- The fuel level must match the pickup fuel level unless a different written arrangement was made.
- Smoking, vaping, pets without approval, excessive sand, stains, odors, trash, or unusual dirt may result in cleaning or odor removal charges.
6. Tickets, fines, and service fees
The renter is responsible for all tickets, parking charges, traffic violations, towing, storage, impound, and government or private charges incurred during the rental period. Additional fees may include, without limitation:
- Interior or vehicle cleaning: $40-$150 when returned dirty after being provided clean.
- Fuel shortage: $40-$100 depending on the fuel level at return.
- Smoking in the vehicle: $200.
- Lost key: $300.
- Vehicle lockout service when keys are left inside: $100.
- Tire puncture or flat tire caused during the rental: $100.
- Technician visit or service call caused by the renter, passenger, or unauthorized use: from $100 depending on the situation.
- Late return: $50 per hour or the applicable daily rate, plus related costs.
If a ticket, fine, or charge is received after the rental ends, the renter agrees to reimburse Alani Car Rental Corp. within 5 business days after notice. Documented collection or legal costs may apply where allowed by law.
7. Damage, accidents, theft, and insurance
- The renter must immediately report any accident, theft, damage, warning light, mechanical issue, lost key, flat tire, or unsafe condition.
- If the vehicle becomes unsafe to operate or a warning light indicates a potentially serious problem, the renter must stop as soon as it is safe and contact Alani Car Rental Corp. before continuing. To the extent permitted by law, the renter is responsible for additional damage caused by continuing to operate the vehicle after such a warning or unsafe condition.
- For accidents, theft, vandalism, or police matters, the renter must obtain a police report when required or when requested by Alani Car Rental Corp.
- The renter may not repair the vehicle or authorize repairs without written approval from Alani Car Rental Corp.
- If the renter is at fault, the renter is responsible for the applicable insurance deductible up to $1,000, as stated in the signed rental agreement.
- The deductible is not charged automatically. Alani Car Rental Corp. will provide a description of the damage, photographs, and an estimate or other evidence of the repair cost. Payment is due only after the responsibility and amount have been agreed to in writing or determined as provided by law.
- If damage is excluded from insurance coverage or caused by prohibited use, negligence, unauthorized drivers, intoxication, or failure to follow the agreement, the renter may be fully responsible for repair, replacement, towing, storage, diminished value, and loss of use.
8. Roadside assistance and technician calls
Contact Alani Car Rental Corp. first when roadside assistance, lockout help, tire service, jump start, towing, or a technician visit is needed. Charges may apply when the service is caused by the renter, passenger, unauthorized driver, lost key, keys locked in the vehicle, depleted battery due to renter action, tire damage, incorrect fuel, or other preventable situation.
9. Early return
- The renter must notify Alani Car Rental Corp. and complete the return at an approved location before the vehicle is considered returned.
- For a voluntary early return, the actual rental period is recalculated using the standard daily rate that was in effect on the pickup date for a rental of the actual shorter duration. Each started 24-hour period counts as a full rental day.
- Alani Car Rental Corp. retains 30% of any positive difference between the prepaid rental price and the recalculated rental charge. A higher non-refundable percentage applies only when it was disclosed in writing in the booking confirmation before pickup, and it will not be less than 30%.
- The remaining balance, after deducting other amounts due, is refunded to the renter. If the recalculation produces no positive balance, no refund is due.
- The early-return retention does not apply when the return is caused by a verified mechanical failure not attributable to the renter and Alani Car Rental Corp. cannot provide a comparable working vehicle. In that case, unused full rental days are refunded proportionally based on the agreed total rental price.
10. Personal property
Alani Car Rental Corp. is not responsible for personal items left in the vehicle, lost during the rental, or left after return. The renter is responsible for removing personal property and clearing personal data from vehicle systems before return.
11. Privacy and updates
Our collection and use of renter information is described in the Privacy Policy. Alani Car Rental Corp. may update these online terms from time to time. The version posted at the time of booking or pickup applies unless the signed rental agreement states otherwise.
